PLCs

Programmable Logic Controllers, or PLCs, are the brains behind machinery automation. Brands vary but the concept is the same: monitor inputs and trigger outputs which drive physical parts. Previously devices were tied to vendor software and thus vendor specific languages, which lead to needing a different contact for your Direct Logic PLCs vs your Allen Bradley’s. Fortunately there have been strides in tearing down those barriers to entry, specifically with initiatives such as OpenPLC and the PLCopen group.

If you have ever heard someone throw around the term “Ladder Logic” they were more than likely talking about PLCs, but there are many other languages floating around including Function Block Diagram and Structured Text. Using latest development practices and tools, most of these old headaches can be left in the past.

Another option to consider is if a Microcontroller is a good fit for your project. Whichever way you go, Willett AVT can help, from design and schematics up through fabrication, installation, and programming.
